How a Fitness Coach Can Help You

This blog is specifically going to detail how having a fitness coach can be extremely beneficial to reaching your goals.
Coming from personal experience hiring a fitness coach is an excellent decision and probably one of the smartest decisions you can make.

Let me explain.  What price would you be willing to sell your health at?  For me personally, there is no no monetary value I would be willing to place, compromise, or jeopardize my health.  All the money in the world is useless if you have poor health.  I value my health as a top priority.

Unfortunately, too many people do not value their health or make it as a top priority.
Often, people will be reactive rather than proactive when taking care of their health.
By being proactive you can prevent bad health and diseases before they occur.  This is the best solution and will save you time, stress, and possibly worst case scenarios of disease, bad health, or even a shortened lifespan.

Hiring a fitness coach is to help you is the smartest idea if you value your health.  Even as a personal trainer, I've had the opportunity to have amazing coaches and I have hired several fitness coaches myself.

Why is this you ask? Now lets look at elite athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Georges St. Pierre.  Would they need coaches even though they are accomplished professionals?  No matter how good you are, when you stop learning, you stop growing.

Now the benefits of having a fitness coach can help you in many ways.
A fitness coach is a professional that will help you set goals, be supportive, help you with motivation, design a program for you, teach you the proper techniques, and how to exercise safely.

In my experience while working in the gym as a trainer, I have encountered people that actually paid thousands of dollars to a physiotherapist after they injure themselves while trying to figure it out how to exercise properly by themselves.  Don't reinvent the wheel.

Before hiring a fitness coach, do your research.  Some fitness coaches are more qualified than others and have the proper knowledge and experience depending on the clients needs.  For example, some fitness coaches are more knowledgable and have more experience with training sports specific, weightloss, or dealing with clients with injuries.

Ultimately, hiring a fitness coach is one of the best decisions you can make for your health.  Once you find the proper coach specifically that meets your needs, you are on the path of living a healthier life.

The Joys of Training Female Clients

The blog I'm about to write is in no way intended to offend any males.  As a trainer, I have had the pleasure and opportunity to train hundreds of males that had all kinds of different fitness goals.  So the blog I am about to write are just some of my views and keep in mind they are very general view points.  I still train males in my bootcamp, and I have alot of fun in my co-ed bootcamp and I still enjoy training males very much.  By the same token, I have an all exclusive B.O.S.S Fit Ladies program and you can never duplicate that experience.  So, this article is going to focus on my joys and personal experiences with training female clients.  This blog is for the ladies :)

In my experience as a trainer, I enjoy training female clients.  The reasons are:

1) Females are very attention detailed oriented
2) Females listen extremely well to information and when you give them new exercises they are very eager to learn
3) Females do not have a big ego.  They are more focused on their goals and seem more driven to attain them.
4) Females are more empathetic when you are not having a great day.  They are generally more understanding.  As a trainer, you play the coach, the therapist at the same time.  Sometimes we need a shoulder to lean on too.
5)  Females do not try to lift more weight than the trainer and say
"See my muscles are bigger and stronger than yours, what am I paying you for?"  Their focus isn't on "Hey bro how much can you bench press?"  "Bro how much can you squat?" "Bro how much can you deadlift?" "Hey bro how much can you lift?"
6) Although, I do not watch Sex in the City or The Kardashians on tv, in real life some of the female conversations are utterly outrageous and the humour gets me in touch with my feminine side.  Errr well maybe not but I think you get to know what I mean.
7) Females focus on more than just chest and arms.  You see, females generally like to tone their legs, butt, arms, and core.  Male clients seem to focus on chest and arms and end up developing muscle imbalances and bad posture.
8) By training females, I begin to understand how their mindset works.  I can never figure out woman, but hearing their perspective I am one step closer to finally figuring it all out :)
9) Female clients are very caring and in my personal experience as a trainer, they know how to treat a trainer right!  I've been lucky enough to have many of my female clients bring me food, especially after a long training session and I'm extremely hungry.
10) I'm about to be a dad, and I am about to bring a baby girl into the world.  Some of the best advice I have ever been given has been passed on by moms from my bootcamp.  I am more than blessed to have such caring clients that have given me their wisdom about being a parent.

There you have it my top 10 reasons.  Until the next blog, stay tuned.  If you are a female in the Toronto area and you are interested in losing weight, toning up, having fun and get in serious shape come to my exclusive B.O.S.S Fit Ladies program Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:30am-10:30am at Ryouko Martial Arts, 91 Rylander Blvd, Unit 1-21.  416-284-8861 or email bossfitness@live.com

The Most Common Excuse

The most common excuses I hear as a trainer is "I don't have time to do an exercise program."
The reality of the situation is there is time if you make the time and if you prioritize your health and fitness into your daily routine.

There will come times when we are extremely busy and that it is incredibly hard because of our work schedule, the kids, and other things that come up in our daily lives.
Currently by the Public Health Agency of Canada recommends a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes a day, along with resistance training and flexibility  At the bare minimum no matter how busy we get, we should be taking our own health in our own hands and make 30 to 60 minutes 2 - 3 times a week.

The benefits of exercise make you feel better, look better, give you energy, and you have more vitality to do daily activities.

Imagine if you found out that you developed some illness and it would jeopardize your health and you had only a few months to live.  That is a horrible scenario, but often we defer and place our health low on the priority list.

If you were ever in a situation where you had bad health, I bet you would try your damn hardest to find time to exercise or place it immediately high on your priority.

You need to find out what motivates you to get started.  Is it for yourself? Is it to live a longer healthier life for your kids?

Success is the sum of all small efforts repeated day in day out.  There is no giant step where you get to leap frog to the end goal.  I promise if you reduce your leisure time with the tv, your smart phones, the internet you'd be surprised how easily you can fit a bit of exercise into your daily routine.

Success starts in the mind.  Visualize your success first.  Once you build momentum from building an exercise routine, it becomes a natural good habit that you have developed.

For some examples of excellent body weight calisthenic workouts you can do at home,  add us on instagram "bossfit416" or visit www.facebook.com/bossfitness.  Show your support and click "like" :)

I wish you all the best of success and great health.

Training clients with injuries

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to train many clients with different injuries.
If a potential client has new injuries, I will not train them unless they get a medical clearance letter from a doctor and preferably the doctor that has treated him/her.

I will also recommend the client get physiotherapy to deal with the injuries as an alternative before coming to see me.  If they already have been to a physiotherapist to treat their pre-existing injury and have been medically cleared by a doctor, I will work with the client that is ready to train.

Working with a physiotherapist is an excellent resource for a personal trainer.  They will be able to specifically tell you about the client's range of motion and any possible limitations that your client may have.

If a client has a minor injury like a sprain or tightness in muscles from either walking the dog, sitting too long at a desk at work, I will usually ask them if they are ready to train first.  During the training session, we will often have modifying exercises that will work around the area to prevent putting pressure or straining the injured area and possibly causing further injury.

Any client that is in pain during the work out and cannot continue will be sent home.  I will always follow up with a client to see how they are doing.  If they continue to experience pain for more than a few days, I will ask them to go to their doctor for for a check up before they can continue.

I always enjoy working with clients that have limitations and injuries because I have a few injuries myself and understand how my clients feel.  It is always a bonus when you see your client progress through their limitations and are on their way back to starting an exercise program, and continuing on with a healthy lifestyle.  The smile on my clients faces are what gives me the motivation to love doing what I do for a living.

Corey T.
